Cold Spell Puts Some of the UK and Latest AI Updates on ice!

Hey human, welcome back! December is well and truly here and that cold weather (or warm weather for our southern hemisphere readers) is settling in. Grab some snacks, and chow down the latest instalment of TeacherPrompts. It is the first of the month, so there is some new tools, research and podcast to digest.

Knowledge builders 📚

  • Hallucinations → Instances where AI Models generate incorrect, nonsensical or irrelevant outputs while responding to prompts. You may hear AI companies talk about how the latest models ‘hallucinate’ less than previous models.

  • AGI → Artificial General Intelligence is a form of AI that possesses the ability to understand, learn and apply its intelligence much in the way humans can.

Industry updates 🤖

  • Google delays its next AI Model, Gemini, to 2024 Concerns around how Gemini could cope with non-English prompts has resulted in a short delay to the launch of OpenAI’s main competition.

  • ChatGPT Store Delayed Google is not the only company announcing delays… ChatGPT store, where premium subscribers could train their own ‘GPTs’ and release them, has also been delayed. There are some rumours that this is to do with the firing of Sam Altman earlier in November.

Tools 🛠️

  1. PIKA  Text-to-video got one step closer with the soft launch of Pika 1.0. It is currently waiting list only, but the premise is type what you want and a short AI generated video gets created.

  2. Notion AI I am a massive fan of using Notion as my professional note taking app. Their AI model lets you generate texts, automatically create actions based on meeting notes, and you can now directly ask the AI about all the notes that you have. With a free account you do get some limited access, but if you are a Notion fan already, it is worth the upgrade!

🎙️Convince Me AI has a Place in Education I talk with Kieran Mackle, the host of Thinking Deeply about Primary Education, where I try to convince him that AI is here to stay, so we may as well embrace it.

📑 ChatGPT for Education and Research -Opportunities, Threats and Strategies  The paper aims to provide an in-depth examination of the issues and concerns related to the integration of ChatGPT into educational settings, presenting an argument in favour of its incorporation into education and offering strategies for its responsible and successful implementation in teaching and research.

Fresh prompts ✨

  1. Foundation level: Targeted data in a table → Every now and then you come across a resource that just does not quite have what you want. A teacher in the Trust where I work was teaching a lesson on the planets and wanted some specific data for the pupils to see. Instead of trawling websites to get it, a simple prompt was enough to get all the data they wanted. The deep structure would look like this:

    You are a teacher of [subject] in [year group]. You will teach them about [lesson objective]. Produce a table [detail of what you want in your table].

You are a teacher of science to children in Year 5. You are going to teach them about the planets. Produce a table of all 8 planets which has the following information - size, distance from the sun, how long it takes to orbit the sun, how long a 'day' is on each planet and the the number of moons.

From here you could ask all sorts of follow-ups for quizzes or additional explanations.

  1. Expert level: Research Assistant → I enjoy reading research, but some of the mathematical aspects are a struggle. Thankfully, Co-pilot in bing is contextually aware, so it reads the documents it can see on the screen. I was recently reading a paper about a new corpus of English words, and wanted clarification as to what figure 1 represented. Two prompts (see image below) helped clarify this for me.
