🤖Do humans prefer AI friends?

Hey human,

Big shout out if you have just finished the summer term! I hope you enjoy a well deserved break. For those still going a bit longer, we soldier on, but the end is in sight.

📚 AI+education news

  • Here is a heartbreaking video of a 10-year-old calling LBC to explain the impact ‘AI Friendship’ is having on a peer. It is scary, but when you are consistently praised and rarely challenged, why would you go for the alternative? This is something I think schools will find quite common in the coming years.

  • Many people serious about the teaching of writing know about The Writing Revolution and exercises such as ‘because, but, so’. They have now launched an AI assistant, Judy, who specialises in Writing Revolution Activities. This is AI done well!

🌍 Wider AI updates

  • OpenAI launches ChatGPT agent. The concept of AI agents is simple. Tools that can take specific actions for you. While not available on the free tier, ChatGPT agent will eventually be able to hand some complex tasks, hopefully freeing up more time for teachers to spend on the things that matter. Check out the link above for some examples.

  • Google and OpenAI have defeated high schoolers in mathematics after achieving a gold medal in this year’s International Mathematical Olympiad. The twist is that the problems were completed by models not available to the public, and those that are available performed poorly.

  • Meta refuses to abide by EY safety guidelines. Given the prevalence of AI tools in Meta products like WhatsApp and Instagram, this should be a cause of concern.

  • OpenAI and UK government announce a deal for OpenAI models to be used in public services.

🎯Prompt

  • Claude’s artefacts got a recent upgrade and the flow needed to create them makes them far more accessible than before as Claude will guide you as to what you want to make. The summer holiday is a perfect opportunity to have a play and see what you can create to support your students. Here is a water resistance simulator I created with a bit of back and forth.

There’s no one-shot prompt that gets it perfect, just minor tweaks. Here is what I started with.

I want an educational game where pupils in my class can experiment with the concept of water resistance. My students are in Year 4 in England. I want to focus on how the shape, size and mass of objects impacts the rate at which the sink in water.

If you have created a teacher resource using Claude’s artefacts feature, please share it. I would love to see it.

Till next week.
